THERE WERE SEVERAL SPECIAL guests at the Rotary Club meeting held at the Meadowbank Inn tonight. Oddleiv Eiksund came along to his old club, accompanied by relative Eddy Szalajda who spoke briefly about an interesting project which recycled mobility aids to assist recovery of patients with limb problems in Sri Lanka.

Club members were also treated to the showing of two DVDs by the Club’s sponsored Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) candidates. Lois Simpson and Jason McNulty have both recently returned from a week’s camp at Abernethy and delivered two individual presentations. It was clear that Lois and Jason had found the week’s activities challenging, varied and interesting with considerable emphasis placed on going beyond one’s individual limits! Lois, who has recently left Arbroath Academy and Jason, who had previously attended Arbroath High School were each presented with a certificate recognising their individual achievements. Further information on RYLA can be obtained from www.ryla.org.uk.

RUGBY WAS THE SUBJECT of the talk at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Arbroath tonight. Roy Watson, President of Arbroath Rugby Club and Stewart Ross, Development Officer (Rugby) with Angus Council gave an interesting overview of the growth of the sport in Angus and specifically Arbroath.

Members heard that Arbroath is a young club having only been formed in 1993 but with the assistance of Angus Council and the Scottish Rugby Union the game has developed over the years. Of interest was the introduction of Street Rugby which helps tackle anti social behaviour and rugby’s linkage with the Food Standards Agency which highlighted the importance of exercise and diet.

Angus Cruickshanks gave the vote of thanks and President Don Clark was in the chair.

THE GOLF OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP was the subject chosen by the speaker at tonight's Meeting of the Rotary Club of Arbroath.  Member Gordon Hunter delivered a humorous and well researched talk to the Club and focussed on some interesting facts about this major tournament.  This year’s winner Loius Oosthuizen was a well deserved winner and played immaculate golf during the event. As well as the Claret Jug he walked away with £850,000 and quickly spent some of this by acquiring a John Deere tractor to use on his South African farm. For golfing enthusiasts Mr Oosthuizen’s 4 rounds included 20 Birdies, one eagle, only six dropped shots, hit 55 out of 64 fairways and had an average of 30 putts per round.

Gordon Law proposed the vote of thanks.

During the meeting the Club agreed to send a ShelterBox (www.shelterbox.org) to aid the flood disaster in Pakistan and President Don Clark was in the Chair.

THE SPEAKER AT THE WEEKLY MEETING of Arbroath Rotary Club tonight was the Club’s own Chic Grant.  Chic treated the audience to a shortened history of Freemasonry in Scotland.  Whilst the true origins may be lost the subject would appear to have early Greek, Hebrew and Egyptian connections within building guilds and there is reference to Freemasonry in Dan Brown’s book, the Da Vinci Code. The talk was effectively assisted by several visual aids in the form of fellow Rotarians, Jim Cargill and Wilson Robson.  Chic closed with a mention of one of Scotland’s most famous Freemasons; Robert Burns.

Bruce Currie, a friend of Don Clark, was introduced to the Club and International Convener John Cuthbert reported on a successful Rotary presence at the recent Arbroath Sea Front Spectacular with over £450 being raised for charitable purposes and John thanked the members of the public who came along to the stall and the Rotarians who had assisted on the day.

Iain Grimmond proposed the Vote of Thanks and President Don Clark was in the Chair.

GUEST SPEAKER at the weekly meeting tonight was member Alasdair Graham. Alasdair recalled his two visits to the island of Islay which brought back many fond memories. The island is famous for its numerous distilleries, which numbered eight at the last count and there are records of the famous Bowmore distillery going back to 1797.

However the island has history of a more sad nature and there have been many shipwrecks around the island resulting from natural causes and from German U Boat activity, most notably the torpedoing of the troopship HMS Tuscania in 1918 by UB77, which resulted in 266 lost lives.

Howard Cargill proposed the vote of thanks and President Don Clark was in the chair.

TRANSLATED INTO current monetary values, the Forth Railway Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge cost in the region of £2.5bn each, and that, in general terms, is what the third crossing is estimated to cost when construction starts next year.

This was one of the interesting facts included in a talk by engineer Danny Gentles to Arbroath Rotary Club tonight which looked at various aspects of the proposed new bridge and its approach roads. Danny took in the problems with corrosion of the cables on the current road bridge which are now being addressed, and showed how one proposal converted the bridge to carry a mix of road traffic and a light railway in either direction.

Thanks were proposed by Tony Simpson.
